On the first day we headed down to Nugget Point, one of the beautiful spots on the Southern Scenic Route driving from Balclutha further South towards Owaka. Lucky enough the sky opened up its clouds for us and we took the chance to take photos from the top of the cliff to get the best view on the lighthouse and the rocky islets: The Nuggets.
Close to Nugget Point we got to see a few Yellow Eyed Penguins. This species breeds around the South Island of New Zealand. They are endangered, with an estimated population of 4000. It is considered one of the world's rarest penguin species.
